What does this mean for you?

The effects of the agreements made at COP29 will inevitably trickle down to UK organisations over the coming year and will have a real impact on all of us. Now is the best time to think about what this might mean for you.

At Mitie, we’ve helped dozens of organisations decarbonise their estates and generate their own renewable power. As COP29 approaches, our Plan Zero team will be monitoring events closely to establish how it might impact the needs of our customers.

As always, the sooner you start addressing issues, the easier it is to action change. With that in mind, there are four key steps you can take now to prepare for any changes resulting from this year’s conference.

Incoming legislation and new disclosure requirements will most likely relate to scope 3 emissions. So, getting across these emissions in your supply chain should be your primary focus. Evaluating and optimising your carbon reporting and disclosure processes in general is also advisable to keep ahead of future obligations.

Around 40% of UK carbon emissions are linked to the built environment. So, it’s likely to be a significant driver of your organisation’s emissions too. You may already have a good understanding of your ongoing building carbon emissions but make sure you are not overlooking the emissions from any capital projects you are undertaking. Work with a partner who upholds sustainable construction practices to reduce the carbon footprint of your capital projects.

Look for alternative sources of funding for your decarbonisation initiatives. There are various support schemes available that can help kickstart your efforts.

Before starting anything, have a comprehensive plan in place so you can be sure you’ll deliver your carbon reduction strategy. Secure your short and / or long-term funding, as appropriate. And only then begin to execute your approach.

These four steps will put you in a good position to fully review your decarbonisation strategy once the results of COP29 are clear.
